I recently shot one of the rehearsals for the Canadian Opera Company’s production of Rigoletto, currently in performance at the Four Seasons Centre. You can see selected images below – the first 8 were selected by the COC and appear on their site and facebook page, and the rest are my selections.

This was new for me and quite different from anything I’ve done before, for the COC, or for that matter, anyone else. It’s one thing to shoot a single performer about 10 feet away (often with twirling tassels) and another entirely to work in a large space, well back from a large stage, with many performers and points of interest. Not to mention half an auditorium space to run around in. It was intense and challenging – a real ride on the learning curve.

The review and image selection process was educational too. I know better what to look for, and have lots to think about as far as mixing my style of shooting with promotional needs and performer preferences. It was hard work, fun, and I’d do it again in a flash.

I think you’ll find the images better larger. To do this, click on the icon at the lower right of the slide show.
