Here is a selection of images from yesterday’s performance of segments of Ashkongay, a new production by dancers/choreographers Nova Bhattacharya and Louis Laberge-Côté at the Canadian Opera Company’s Free Concert Series. I think I’ve photographed Nova Bhattacharya every time she’s appeared here since I started working with the Free Concert Series almost 5 years ago. Her performances are always interesting and emotive, and I’m generally always pleased with the photographic results. This performance was excerpted from a preview of a new production that will be showing at Harbourfront as part of their NextSteps 2013 season.

Technically speaking I’ve been working more with a prime lens recently – a 105mm DC which is wonderfully sharp and bright. As long as I’m within a reasonable distance from the performers a prime lens works just fine, and I can augment it with longer shots using my 70-200. I’ve also been experimenting with some image tweakery using OnOne Software’s Perfect Effects. You can see the results in the header image for this post, as well as the full image within the set below (# 3). I was able to salvage the photo in this case, as the original was a little too soft for use.
