Behind the lens – The Art of Song at the COC Free Concert Series

While I’m not shooting the Canadian Opera Company’s Free Concert Series on a regular basis, a last-minute call came in this Tuesday asking if I could photograph The Art of Song, featuring tenor Paul Appleby and pianist Anne Larlee. Appleby’s currently appearing in the COC production of Cosi fan tutte as Fernando. I’m glad I took this on as I’m quite happy with the images. The fact that he has a great presence certainly helps, and the positive dynamic between him and Anne Larlee was evident.

“I gotta say, you’re always good, but a break seems to enhance your prowess. This batch is really stunning.”

My experience in the past is that a break certainly seems to help. I’ve found the same thing in my somewhat personal and private musical efforts – I may be physically out of practice when I come back to whatever I’m working on, but stepping away sometimes gives me a better perspective on what I’m doing, and I find I’m more relaxed and confident as a result. Herewith, some images from this terrific performance.
