At a large format photography workshop I attended several years ago, one of the instructors made a point of saying “It’s not really your art if you don’t print it yourself.” The workshop itself was terrible (not his fault) but that one line has stuck with me ever since.
I’ve always printed my own work and while I still agree with his comment, I also understand that the investment involved in owning and learning to operate a fine art giclée printer can be high, particularly if you only print occasionally. I know this because I own two of these printers, and generally tend to do most of my printing before shows. The rest of the time, these printers sit idle. Ink’s expensive, and unused print heads get plugged up.
I’m happy to announce that I’m now offering fine art printing services using the two Epson fine art printers I have here at World Headquarters. I can print work up to 44 inches wide and 10 feet long on a variety of papers, including Epson’s Somerset Velvet, Ultrasmooth, and Hot and Cold Press papers, as well as the Hahnemuhle line. I can also print Epson Luster stock in sizes up to 16 inches wide and 10 feet long.
My plan is to remain relatively small-scale as far as this service is concerned, and to print your work as provided. This means you’ll need to have an understanding of what’s involved in getting your work ready to print. I’m preparing a workshop and printed materials to help people do this, and can also recommend a great book, Fine Art Printing for Photographers by Uwe Steinuller and Juergen Gulbins, published by Rocky Nook Press. It’s a terrific reference to help you learn and use a workflow that produces the best possible results.
If you need to work at a computer on site, require ongoing colour adjustment and editing work, or need other comprehensive assistance, I can recommend people who can help with that.
